Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Apollo 11 mission. I’ve been listening to Apolloinrealtime.org each night before bed and it’s been great. I know I can go back and listen, and listen to Apollo 17 as well, but it won’t be quite the same.
Fun fact: Columbia was returned to North American Rockwell after processing for a vacuum bake to remove residual moisture from landing. I’m betting it cut down on the funky smell as well.

Columbia was touring as part of a 50th anniversary thing last year or early this year (need to check my NAS
for dates)
, and I got to see it and other artifacts when it was her is St. Louis
. It definitely has an odor. Not as strong as Atlantis at the Space Center (but it’s also smaller) but it’s there. Smells like old burnt metal, like a well-used welder but less ozone.

I saw it at the Hazy Center before they started the tour and noticed the same. I think a lot of it is the ablative coating. We use similar materials inside our engine cowls as fire containment and they smell similar.

Neil Armstrong’s Death, and a Stormy, Secret $6 Million Settlement
I feel the main thing is that when you’re Neil Armstrong and you can presumably go to any hospital in the world, you probably don’t want to do your surgery in Cincinnati...

I though I knew a lot about Apollo until Apolloinrealtime, but I’ve learned so much about how ops really worked in the last week.

I’ve been totally geeking out about this. All the way down to figuring out the name of the US Navy frogman who was the first to jump out of the helicopter to recover the astronauts. His name is John Wolfram, and after Apollo he did two tours of Vietnam and was awarded a Purple Heart. He has since become an ordained minister.

I saw that. It’s a huge shame. The number of folks I know who have had something go wrong due to surgery is frighteningly high.
